Digital Ambient Presence

This project envisions using AR technologies to establish an abstract presence of remotely located persons through their ambient information.

When someone important to you is traveling or recently moved, it is common for you to feel drained from increased communications: texting, calling, sending pictures, or playing phone games… Sometimes there is nothing to say, but you have to keep up the ‘talking’ because both of you are afraid of losing connections over the long distance.

Is there a way to ‘be’ with someone while physically remote from them? In this project, we are designing different ways two people can be aware of each other through simply living their day-to-day life. The method is to display their ambient presence.

Ambient presence is how you are in the same space with someone and know his or her company without active communication. Each person’s activity, translated through sound, light, pressure, smell, and so on, can become the background or periphery information of the other, leading to their ‘quiet’ interactions.

We have developed the initial ideations of the product. Using person A’s activities as input, and the AR display for person B as output, we mapped out a list of correlations that can simulate their digital co-presence.

The next step of this project is to test living with the prototype for a period of time and observe what the digital ambient information feels like in terms of intimacy, and how it will impact two remotely located persons' awareness of each other.
